After a week hiatus, I am back and ready to blog. Lots of cool things are happening in Seattle to get involved in. I was just working with Bumbershoot this past week with One Reel, I hope some of you got to check out the festival and enjoyed yourselves.

Volunteer Youth Soccer Coaches Needed! (Seattle)

Description: The Apple Corps is looking for volunteers to help lead two after-school soccer programs for elementary youth in Seattle. Volunteers will help plan and facilitate eight - ten classes leading activities involving dribbling, shooting, rules and strategy.

Coaching training will be provided to all volunteers.

Recommended Requirements:
- Prior soccer experience.
- Experience working with youth.
- 16 years old +

Classes will be held once a week on Mondays or Wednesdays starting the week of October 6th. Classes will be held between 4:00 and 5:30 PM.

Foreign Policy Research Institute

On Thursday, September 11, 2008, the Foreign Policy Research Institute will sponsor two webcasts on what students should know about 9/11. Schools may sign up to view either or both webcasts live online and participate in the question-and-answer periods. Free Civil Rights Forums The King County Office of Civil Rights is hosting a series of free community forums at King County Libraries to help people learn more about their rights and responsibilities under anti-discrimination laws. Civil Rights Specialists will be there to provide practical advice, focusing on civil rights basics, such as how to recognize discrimination, where and how to report it, and how to prevent discrimination from occurring. Everyone is welcome! Outdoors for All's rock climbing programs require volunteers to serve as belayers, help with fitting harnesses and helmets and provide overall encouragement and supervision. SeattleActivism.org provides information on upcoming events, actions, and meetings as well as links to organizations and resources in the Seattle area related to progressive activist issues.

Two is:
http://www.seattleraceconference.org/ This is a local conference that focuses on race and social justice issues locally in Seattle. They are currently l0oking for folks to sit on the planning committee for the conference but even if you don't have time to plan, you should definitely attend. This is an important opportunity for local people to communicate with the county and I have heard it is quite fun!

A last opportunity worth checking out is the Governor of Washington has multiple committees that she looks for people to sit on. They are currently recruiting for several boards including the Affirmative Action Policy Committee. Check it out!

The Governor's Affirmative Action Policy Committee (GAAPCom) is in the process of recruiting individuals for recommendation to the Governor for committee appointments. The GAAPCom advises the Governor, state agencies, and higher education institutions on policies and practices that affect the state work force in the areas of affirmative action and diversity. The committee consists of representatives from groups such as: African-American, Asian or Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Hispanic/Latino, Women, Persons with disabilities, Disabled Veterans, Vietnam-Era Veterans, and Persons over the age of 40. To be considered for membership on the Committee, the successful candidate should have competencies in the areas of Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity, and/or Diversity as it relates to Outreach, Recruitment, Retention, or Training and Development. The 15 committee members serve three year terms. Candidates must be able to commit to a minimum of five meetings a year and be active on one or more subcommittees of the full Committee. Members are expected to locally represent the GAAPCom through active involvement with groups protected by affirmative action and other diverse communities. Appointed members from community based or private organizations will be reimbursed for travel costs to attend meetings. All committee members serve as non-paid volunteers. Emergency Preparedness Volunteer Recruitment Did you know that nearly half of the health and human services organizations in New Orleans are estimated to have closed their doors after Hurricane Katrina? The Family & Friends Project at the UW Department of Psychology needs parents to help us develop a new parenting program. Volunteers are needed for a group on Wednesday, 8/13. Participation entails attending one parenting group trial session from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Groups will be held on the UW campus in Seattle. Sandfest goers also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite sculpture built by community sponsors. We have positions available for active people who'd like to get down and dirty and pack sand for sculpting, to volunteers who will interact with attendees, and everything in-between. There are a number of opportunities for corporate and community groups to work with sand (and even build a sculpture!) prior to Sandfest during general business hours on Tuesday, August 19th, and on Friday, August 22nd. Other volunteer shifts run periodically throughout the day and during Sandfest on Saturday, August 23rd between 8:30am and 10pm. Niche Travel Guide(http://www.nichetravelguide.com) is a space for culturally sensitive and curious travelers to come together and share ideas, tips and experiences.
